Belhassine's work is guided by the pursuit of beauty. It is a practice built on two pillars. The first is colour — and while today's market offers an ever-expanding range of new pigments, working with them demands both mastery and constant experimentation. The second is the choice of subject matter: he paints scenes from contemporary everyday life, having first reckoned with the weight of art history. This choice reflects both a responsibility and a right — the public's right to see their own way of life and values reflected in the art of their time.
His work is ultimately a negotiation between the temptation of technical control and a spontaneous, impulsive practice — one that, to his mind, is the only thing that can truly give a work its soul.
Born in Tunisia in 1986.
